The Library
The library, adjacent to the lady’s parlor, was once lined with bookcases, only one remains. Like the lady’s parlor, the library is finished in birch wood, and with the large bay window it creates a light and airy environment. Consistent with other rooms, the ornate stained-glass window carries on the Victorian theme. Of particular note is the pocket door separating the library from the great hall; a nod to Richard Newcomb’s eye for detail, the interior side of the door is birch and the side facing the great hall is quarter sawn oak.
The writing desk is original to the house and belonged to Elizabeth Stillwell. When the Newcomb-Stillwell mansion was used to house students for Quincy College, the library was converted into a bathroom for the housemother.
